Departement of Bioinformatics

DEPARTMENT OF BIOINFORMATICS consists of faculty members who are skilled enough to handle their field of teaching very easily.

YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT: 2003

Department consist of 9 faculty members and around 300 students per 60 students in each year. Teachers are very helpful and have mutual Co-operation with students.

Programs Offered
The Department offers the following courses
    B.Tech. Bioinformatics
M.Tech. Bioinformatics * Approved by Council starting next year

Research
Our development has defined thrust areas in which major researches goings are actively pursued. Two main projects are,
> development of Anti-cancer agents based on the Structure of Vinca alkaloids
> Studies on Tsunami and its impact on various biological species and step towards Disaster Management

Our focus of the research is mainly with the application of
Computational strategies in the field of carcinogens. The aim of our research is to design some anti cancer agents based on the structure of Vinca alkaloids (derived from plants which are used to chemotherapeutic agents) protruding towards QSAR leading to some new herbal drugs which will play a vital role in the chemotherapeutic treatment by near future. Based on the above justification we are aiming to broaden our research to other diseases like Tuberculosis/ HIV etc.

The second project focus on the studies on Tsunami and its biological species especially aiming on the prospects of bioremediation.

As a mitigation measure for Tsunami disaster it was proposed that Mangrove, casuarinas or Palm vegetation will be protective
· Having known the impact of Tsunami, it is the need of the hour to do progressive work on the relative field.

ENVIRONMENT (MOLECULAR OPERATING SYSTEM) SOFTWARE
CHEMICAL COMPUTING GROUP, Inc (CCG) is the leading supplier of scientific software for life Science. CCG's software platform, the Molecular operating environment (MOE), combines visualization, Simulation and method development in a single package.

Used for:
Protein modeling
Cheminformatics & QSAR
Pharmacophore modeling
Structure-based design
Molecular modeling & Simulation

Application:
MOE application are written in the Scientific vector Language (SVL), an embedded chemistry aware programming language created by CCG. It runs on a range of OS platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, IBM AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris and SILICON Graphics Irix).CCG is based in Montreal, CANADA with corporate offices in Cambridge, UK, Koln, Germany and Bangalore, INDIA.

Placement
The career prospect in bioinformatics has been steadily increasing with more and more use of I.T in the field of Molecular Biology. Job prospects are in all sectors of Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals and Biomedical Science in research institutions, hospitals and industry.

Nature of job varies as-Bioinformatician, Biomedical computational scientist, genetic Biostatistician, computational chemist, data base and design maintenance etc.

Sathyam, wipro, T.C.S, Reliance have started absorbing Bioinformatics students.
