School of Automotive Technology

The School of Automotive Technology at Bharath University was started in the year 2003 and was offering a four year (undergraduate Programme (B.Tech) in Automobile Engineering for students of higher secondary education is being offered. Bharath University has become one of the constituent institutions of the Deemed University and hence, the School of Automotive Technology has also become a School of Automotive Technology of Bharath University. The postgraduate Programme to be started in 2007. This is the only pioneering Institute which is an offering both UG and PG Programmes in Automobile Engineering. Besides offering MS (by research) and Ph.D. Programmes.

The Society of Automobile Engineers, headquatered in USA. Globally it is well-known that Bharath University offers quality education in Automobile Engineering, which is evident from the fact that multi-nationals are selecting Chennai as their destination to start their mega car projects.

LIBRARY The School of Automotive Technology has a own library including a number of rare books on Automobile Engineering. It also keeps the senior students' projects for the benefit of the current students.

FUTURE PLANS: The School of Automotive Technology is considering the possibilities of starting new programmes in the areas of 1. Transportation Engineering 2. Marine Engine Technology 3. Automotive Electronics and GPS system4. space propulsion Technology

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
All the staff members of the School of Automotive Technology are either guiding or pursuing research work. The research findings of the staff members are regularly presented /published in national and international conferences and journals. The faculty members have presented papers in International Conferences. The current research activities include the following areas: 1. Modern Two-stroke & four stroke Engines 2. Pollution Control of Diesel Engines 3. Alternative Fuels Application 4. Automotive Electronics management5. Vehicle Dynamics 6. Automotive Vibration and Fatigue 7. Automotive Disc Brakes Design.

PLACEMENT
Every year about 95% of the students are recruited by the reputed automobile organizations such as TVS, ASHOK LEYLAND, HYUNDAI, etc., and in certain IT/Software companies.

ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES
The Automobile Engineering Association usually starts its activities in the month of January every year. The annual technical celebration of AEA is titled, AUTOFEST, at which many Technical and Non-Technical events are hosted. Technical events include Paper Presentation, Quiz, Design, Drawing Contests, etc and Non-Technical events include Hanging quiz, Crossword, etc. During the weekly sessions of AEA the students are exposed to Aptitude test, Group discussions and Mock interviews, which enable them to improve their communication skills, technical knowledge and face the interviews with improved confidence. Guest lectures and Industrial visits to various factories in and around the city of Chennai are arranged to offer the students an exposure to the current trends in the industry and latest technologies of automation. The Association also arranges special training programmes in different Automotive industries to update the knowledge of the students.

The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Club is successfully functioning in the School of Automotive Technology and the current students are members of this prestigious Forum which provides an opportunity for an exposure on global Automotive Business. The staff and students actively involve themselves in presenting papers in the National and international conferences organised by SAE. In addition to these activities, SAE has a library of its own.

NEWS/ EVENTS
Every year a guest lecture is arranged in the month of April and October to commemorate Prof. A.J.D.Nandha Kumar and prizes are distributed to the best students for their academic excellence in Engineering Design and projects.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
The School of Automotive Technology has conducted a number of conferences and seminars: one National Conference, one National Seminars, two students Seminars on various topics in the trends of Automotive Industry The School of Automotive Technology has also planning to conduct short-term foundation course on "Automobile Engineering" in the area of "Servicing and Repairing Two-Wheelers and Three-Wheelers" for the unemployed youth.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
The staff members are encouraged to attend various Courses sponsored by Bharath University and also the courses conducted by other institutions and Organisations.
